John's Success Story

John was the first to admit his skills were limited as all he had ever done was work within demolition and asbestos removal. At one point John became so doubtful he suggested his ideal job was to become a “lion tamer”.

John joined the Flexible New Deal Programme in July 2010.   He had been unemployed for two years after being laid off from his previous job.   When John attended his first meeting he was doubtful about the future and felt uncertain about his chances of finding work.    John was the first to admit his skills were limited as all he had ever done was work within demolition and asbestos removal.  At one point John became so doubtful he suggested his ideal job was to become a “lion tamer”.

John’s lack of confidence led him to doubt his transferable skills and he was cautious about looking at other opportunities for work.  John eventually engaged with the one to one support on offer and realised through constant encouragement and guidance that he had many skills that could be useful in other areas of work. John was eventually offered a Work Placement as a Warehouse Operative with Alpine Fine Foods and although he felt anxious, he soon settled into work and became a valuable  member of the  Alpine workforce.  So much so, that Steve Potter, Operations Manager at Alpine offered John permanent work at the end of his work placement.   Steve was so impressed with John’s work ethic and abilities that he even found the time to provide a shining tribute for John.
