HISTORY OF THE HOOPER BUILDING

The Hooper Building until 2006 was a library building for Hull University but with funding from the European Regional Development Fund, applied for by Goodwin Development Trust, and following extensive refurbishment, a modern and vibrant space has now been created which is let to various organisations.
As with other design projects undertaken by Goodwin, such as The Octagon, the Trust wanted to provide an exceptional and dedicated working environment. The refurbishment has been completed to a high quality standard and central to this has been the creation of a glass atrium roof that draws natural light into the whole of the building. This feature also plays an integral part to the heating and ventilation of the building to reduce running costs and minimise the carbon footprint of the building.
Many other features included in the refurbishment have been incorporated to reduce the carbon footprint of The Hooper Building and to make a contribution to energy saving wherever possible. Solar panels provide heating and hot water and photo cell occupancy sensors control the lighting within the office areas to switch off when not occupied. The building is designed to provide maximum accessibility for residents and visitors and whilst meeting all standard building DDA requirements it also has facilities on the ground floor that will meet registration requirements for Hull's 'Changing Places' directory, and will therefore begin to address some of the city centre shortages of such facilities. Local building firm Hobson & Porter were commissioned to carry out the work.
CHANGING PLACES FACILITY
The changing places facility at the Hooper Building was completed in January 2008. They are designed to meet the needs of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities who need support to use the toilet. It is equipped with an Oxford Midi Hydraulic hoist, and people who wish to use this hoist need to provide their own slings. There is also a free standing height adjustable changing bench and plenty of space.
The toilet is available to use during venue opening hours.
8.30 am - 5.00 pm Monday to Friday
Anyone in the area is welcome to use these changing room facilities, simply visit the Hooper Building and see staff at the reception desk.
