Goodwin joins the fight against food poverty in Hull
Goodwin Development Trust has joined the fight against food poverty with the launch of FareShare Hull.
Food poverty has hit all the national headlines recently and now, the Goodwin Development Trust has proudly placed itself in the frontline of the fight against food poverty on our own doorstep with the launch of the FareShare Hull project.
FareShare Hull is a major development for disadvantaged people in our city. At a time of great economic uncertainty we’ve all had to tighten our financial belts and cut our cloth accordingly. But unfortunately many people in Hull have run out of cloth to cut and are already in dire financial straits and, unbelievably in modern Britain, food poverty has become a harsh reality for far too many in our city.
But now, Goodwin is tackling that harsh reality head-on with the launch of FareShare Hull which will be based at a state-of-the-art food distribution depot on the Malmo Food Park on Sutton Fields Industrial Estate.
FareShare is a national charity supporting communities to relieve food poverty – and Goodwin hosts and operates the Hull branch. It is at the centre of two of the most urgent issues that face the UK – food poverty and food waste. FareShare addresses these issues by:
- Providing quality food– surplus ‘fit for purpose’ products from the food and drink industry is redistributed to organisations working with disadvantaged people in the community.
- Providing training and education– including the essential life skills of safe food preparation and nutrition, as well as warehouse employability training. Promoting the message that ‘No Good Food Should Be Wasted’.
Established in 1994 as a project within the homelessness charity Crisis, FareShare aims to help vulnerable groups, whether they are homeless, elderly, children, or other groups in food poverty within our communities.
