STAR was a service funded by Hull City Council Housing Department, and managed by Goodwin to provide support to Tenants and Residents Associations (TARAs) across Hull. The project closed when our contract ended on Wednesday 9th November 2011, but we have retained this website as a source of useful information and as a project archive.

Hull Community Wardens

Hull Community Wardens

The Hull Community Warden Service is the largest and longest running of the projects that Goodwin offers. The service was established in 2001 as the first national Home Office approved scheme and is cited as an example of best practice by the Department of Communities and Local Government.

Quality of Life

Goodwin has run a series of participatory studies on the Thornton Estate over the past 10 years. The most recent (summer 2009) resulted in a new Quality of Life Development Co-ordinator being appointed to provide a conduit for the development of resident-led projects and groups around a variety of issues on the estate.That Co-ordinator is Sharon Darley and each month Sharon gives us an update on what's going on on Thornton Estate. That update contains information on everything from simple things such as where you can get a nice cup of tea, right up to major projects and opportunities to influence how life is lived on Thornton. Preventing Re-offending Project (PRP)

Preventing Re-offending Project (PRP)

The PRP offers one-to-one mentoring for offenders serving sentences of twelve months or less. Key Support Workers provide a bespoke offender intervention service to address issues identified as contributory factors towards re-offending. These include accommodation, lack of aspirations, family breakdown, mental and physical health, alcohol and drugs, children and families, attitude and Behaviour and lack of skills and employment.

Community Justice Court

The Community Justice Court Project provides support to people at sentence in the magistrates’ court by means of referrals from the court at the point of sentence. The service we provide includes; signposting to external organisations best placed to offer support and internal Goodwin services, to identify and assist with any issues clients have, in a bid to reduce re-offending and to reduce costs. This project has a main focus around mental health and links closely with the Preventing Re-offending Project (above).

Thornton Fresh Food Co-op

Thornton Fresh Food Co-op

A new shop has appeared on the parade of shops on Walker St, Hull – but it’s not a Tesco Express or a Sainsbury’s Local or a Cost-Cutter or, indeed, any of the usual big-business chains that you usually expect to see on a local shopping street.

This is something altogether different.

Community Organisers

Goodwin Development Trust is one of 11 ‘kickstarter’ organisations chosen to pilot the national Community Organisers scheme.

Community Organisers is a government funded scheme which aims to train 5,000 ‘community organisers’, individuals who will work in local communities around the country to bring people together, listen to ideas, build networks and support people to tackle the local issues which are important to them.
