Hull Community Wardens

Wardens with resident Wardens with resident

The Hull Community Warden Service is the largest and longest running of the projects that Goodwin offers. The service was established in 2001 as the first national Home Office approved scheme and is cited as an example of best practice by the Department of Communities and Local Government.

The Wardens are funded through a contract with Hull City Council and are co-located in council offices with Area Co-ordination Teams. There are four areas of focus in which the Wardens participate, including Environmental, Crime Prevention, Community Cohesion and Engagement. Hull Community Wardens are the only service in the country to have received three distinctions from the Government in assessment for the Warden Quality Standard.

January to August 2011 - All teams have a Warden who has received training on the Digital Switchover, which will take place later this year. This activity is aimed mainly at the elderly and vulnerable who may not understand what the switchover entails. The Wardens have found many instances of attempted miss-selling of equipment such as digital aerials, which are not needed. They are able to give sound advice on this matter and report any spurious practices to Trading Standards. Many presentations have been organised by the Wardens to groups of mainly elderly residents. This has proved to be a worthwhile project and the demand for information is very high.

June 2011 - A Warden recently facilitated an Internet safety scenario at the Kid Alert event. This was very popular and received positive feedback from teachers and pupils. Around 1,000 young people were engaged and received messages regarding safe Internet usage and cyber bullying. The Wardens were asked if they could deliver this presentation to schools. This may become a city-wide project.

The Royal British Legion Wardens provide a range of safer and stronger services to qualifying beneficiaries and the Goodwin Handy Van service provides security fitting in homes. These services work closely with the Community Wardens and further details can be found in the Health and Wellbeing section.

If you would like to know more about the project, please contact the Wardens Manager - Martin Davies on 07973 393878 or email mdavies@goodwin-centre.org
