Thornton Fresh Food Co-op

A new shop has appeared on the parade of shops on Walker St, Hull – but it’s not a Tesco Express or a Sainsbury’s Local or a Cost-Cutter or, indeed, any of the usual big-business chains that you usually expect to see on a local shopping street.

This is something altogether different.

Local people had long hoped for a shop that sold affordable, good quality fruit and veg and now - with the help of the Goodwin Development Trust – that hope has become a reality with the grand opening of Fruit, Veg and more... on the Thornton Parade. This new shop has been created and will be operated by local volunteers who came together to form the Thornton Fresh Food Cooperative in a bid to supply their community with quality, fresh, healthy produce.

Stuart Spandler, Chairman of the Goodwin Development Trust, said: “The positive implications of this hugely important venture are immense – and can only serve to improve the health and wellbeing of the local community. The shop is just one of many outcomes of a participatory process called Quality of Life, which Goodwin hosted and supported. That process highlighted the lack of locally available, good quality fresh fruit and vegetables and the grand opening of Fruit, Veg and more... is the culmination of that process – a shop for the community that is run by the community.

The Thornton Estate residents have a long and formidable track record of organising and driving forward positive changes to their community – the Goodwin Development Trust being a classic example – and the opening of this shop is a testament to that past commitment and a sign-post to what can be achieved in the future.

Seventeen years ago, Goodwin began its life on that Parade of shops and now employs 270 people in 26 locations throughout Hull. Who knows... in 17 years’ time the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury’s might be looking over their shoulder!..

Goodwin Development Trust carried out the 'Quality of Life 4' appraisal were residents identified issues and offered solutions for Thornton Estate. One of many issues that came up was a lack of access to good quality, affordable fresh food. In answer to this, Goodwin sourced funding to set up and open a fresh food co-op. The shop will open in approximately 8 weeks time on The Goodwin Parade, Walker Street, opposite the Octagon. The funding pays for one shop manager for two years; everyone else will be volunteers. We already have a substantial group of residents who have shown an active interest in the project and we will need a core of volunteers to help run the shop. This is an exciting project and not just a shop - it will be a community hub that will help improve residents' health, help their pockets and bring the community together. If you are interested in getting involved on a voluntary-basis, please contact Sharon Darley (Quality of Life Development Co-ordinator) on 07973 387144 / SDarley@goodwin-centre.org or call Goodwin Centre reception 01482 587550.
